Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: I have been working in education for over 30 years with the last 17 at Hillarys PS in a variety of teaching roles. Currently I am the Associate Principal with my main roles being Year 3-6 Team Leader and Instructional/Curriculum leader. My personal interests include travel, sport and Pilates.
Board Tenure: I am in my 4th year as Hillarys School Board Member

Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: My understanding of Hillarys PS, our students, and our data enables me to inform the board about the academic progress of our students. Everything we do should be with our students in mind.

Name: James Ashman
Staff Member – Upper Primary Teacher
Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: I have been teaching since 2018 and at Hillarys PS since 2021. Teaching is my second career after working in business related occupations. I am a passionate teacher and enjoy seeing students develop through upper years learning and enjoy the transitional ages of upper primary as they develop from young children to independent adolescents. I am passionate about literacy and the benefits of regular reading for the impact it can have on a student’s abilities in all learning areas. My personal interests are watching sports, raising my kids and smoking meats (often at the same time).
Board Tenure: It’s my first year as a Hillarys Board Member
Connection with School: I am currently a Year 6 teacher at
Hillarys Primary School in Djeran 4. I also have two children attending Hillarys Primary in PP and Year 1.
Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: As a teacher and a parent I saw the school board as an opportunity to be further involved with the HIllarys Community and a group of outside experts in a range of positions to help reflect the students requirements. It is also an opportunity to be an ambassador of the staff from an upper primary perspective and work toward continuing to create successful students

Connection with School: I live locally in Padbury and love the Hillarys community, have worked at Hillarys PS since 2020 and have loved watching it change and grow

Name: Lisa Sgambelluri
Staff Member – Early Childhood Teacher
Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: I have been teaching at Hillarys since 2014 and have a deep passion for working in the early years. I love building the foundation for students to develop their love of learning and a positive attitude towards school. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them grow in confidence and develop vital skills that will support their future learning. When I’m not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family and travelling.
Board Tenure: I am in my 1st year as a Hillarys Primary School Board Member.
Connection with School: I teach Pre Primary in Djilba 3.
Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: I was eager to join the school board to strengthen my connection with the school community and gain a deeper understanding of how our school operates and makes decisions that impact student learning and wellbeing.

Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: I have been in education for nearly 20 years, working first as an early childhood teacher and now as a Deputy Principal. I am passionate about education and strongly believe all children can learn and should be given opportunities to reach their potential.
Board Tenure: I joined the board in 2023.
Connection with School: My twin daughters are currently in Year 1 and have attended Hillarys PS since Kindy.
Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: It is my way of giving back to the school by being an active member of the board and having a voice.

Name: Emily Brown

Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: I am a primary school teacher with a passion for instilling a love of learning and discovery in students and creating a strong community within the school.
Board Tenure: I joined the board in 2024.
Connection with School: I have a son in pre-primary and my daughter will be commencing Kindergarten in 2025.
Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: I know the significant impact a child’s education and the community they are immersed in can have on their development and wellbeing throughout their life. I hope to contribute in any way possible to continuing the outstanding community connection and commitment to education that Hillarys Primary School has developed and maintained over its history.

Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: Business and financial management, strategic planning, and leadership.
Board Tenure: I joined the board in 2025, however, I have been a member of a school board previously.
Connection with School: I have three daughters, two of which attend Hillarys Primary School, one in Year 2 and the other in Year 5.
Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: I am motivated to contribute to the educational community and I am driven by a commitment to be as involved in the education of my children as possible. Having served on a school board previously, I have witnessed first hand the positive impact that effective governance can have on student outcomes, and I am eager to bring my experience and insights to Hillarys Primary School.

Name: Gemma Elliott

Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: With a background in educational leadership I bring a wealth of experience in the development and implementation of excellence in teaching and learning. My expertise within The Arts has equipped me with a deep understanding of how creative disciplines can foster innovation, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence among children. I am passionate about inclusivity and ensuring all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential. I have a strong interest in community engagement and believe in the power of collaborative partnerships between schools, families, and the local community to enrich educational experiences.
Board Tenure: 2025 onwards.
Connection with School: As both a dedicated parent and a local resident, I share in the values and needs of the school community. This connection to the school allows me to advocate effectively for initiatives that benefit students, families, and the wider school community.

As a parent and community member, I aim to ensure that the school continues to be a nurturing and inspiring environment where all students can thrive. Experience/Areas of Speciality/Interests: I have a medical background and currently work as an emergency specialist at a local hospital. I have experience in medical administration, clinical redesign, and project management. Outside of work, I play for a local netball team and enjoy spending time with friends and family.
Board Tenure: I joined the board in 2025
Connection with School: I have three daughters. Two are currently enrolled at Hillarys Primary School, one in Year 3 and the other in Year 1. My youngest daughter is set to start kindergarten in a few years.
Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: I joined the school board because I’m passionate about the role public education plays in shaping our future. I’m committed to ensuring that HPS’s positive, supportive, and inclusive school culture is maintained, believing every student deserves a high-quality education that fosters both academic and personal growth. As a board member, my goal is to make decisions that help HPS students reach their full potential and contribute to the continued success of the entire school community.

Summary/Why I Wanted to Join the School Board: I was eager to join the Hillarys Primary School Board in my final year as a parent to contribute my expertise in education, leadership, and curriculum development. As both an educator and a parent, I am passionate about fostering a high-quality, inclusive learning environment and believe strong collaboration between schools, families, and the community is essential for student success. Serving on the board would allow me to support strategic decision-making that enhances student outcomes and strengthens the school’s vision. With extensive experience in literacy, curriculum design and teacher leadership, I bring a deep understanding of effective teaching and learning practices. I have successfully implemented evidence-based programs, driven school-wide initiatives, and promoted cultural inclusivity. My ability to analyse data, engage in critical reflection, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders ensures I can contribute meaningfully to board discussions and decision-making. I am committed to supporting the school board in policy development, strategic planning, and transparent governance.
